For the first time in the sound universe of Malian music, BKO brings together the guitar of the griots and the six-stringed lute of the Donsos (animist Bambaras hunters) at the heart of its intense contemporary sound.
A one-way ticket to MALI? BKO: that’s the airport code for Bamako!
So it’s in Bamako — door 386, Rue 20, in the Medina Coura district that the group BKO have been rehearsing since April 2012, the date when the Malian government declared of a state of emergency.
Back then, no-one could have imagined that this place would give birth to three albums and more than 400 concerts in 25 countries.
Warm vibrant voices, hybrid percussions and n’goni strings, shaped by amplification and saturation, create a singular and unique sound from the Sahel.
Though anchored in centuries-old traditions, BKO’s music will transport you to the heart of today’s urban Mali as well as to the ritual and mystical depths of animist hunters.
